Data Centers
The Energy Challenge of Data Centers
Data centers are the digital heart of our economy, enabling cloud computing, AI training, online services, and real-time data processing. However, they also represent a massive and growing energy footprint: global data centers currently consume over 3% of the world's electricity, with projections doubling due to the exponential rise of AI workloads and hitting more up to 8000TWh / year within 2030, equivalent to the power consumption of several countries.
At the core of this challenge lies power conversion: every watt drawn from the grid must pass through a series of power conversion stages—each with inherent inefficiencies. Eggtronic addresses this bottleneck with a new generation of ultra-efficient IC controllers for server power supply units, (PSU), Intermediate Bus Converters (IBC) down to 1V to supply the most demanding GPUs and CPUs. This is enabling dramatic improvements in efficiency, power density, current density, reliability, and total cost of ownership of data centers and AI data centers.
Server Power Supply Units (PSUs): Grid to 48V
Modern servers use multi-stage power architectures. The first stage is the Server PSU, which performs:
- Power Factor Correction (PFC) to meet grid compliance and reduce harmonics.
- High-voltage DC/DC conversion, typically stepping 380V–400V down to a regulated 48V bus.
These two sub-blocks are critical for energy efficiency and thermal management.
As a function of the power level, Eggtronic developed specific reference designs and ICs for each need in the field of high performance computing.
Intermediate Bus Conversion and Processor power: 48V to 1V
While traditional IBC are capable of stepping down from 48V to 12V or 6V, with the need of another converter from 12V to 1V to power the processor, Eggtronic is capable of a proprietary single stage direct 48V to 1V converter, supporting:
- Extreme step-down ratios (48V to 1V) with high efficiency.
- Multiphase topologies for current sharing and thermal spreading.
- Fast transient response, ideal for AI training and inference workloads.
Next-Generation 800V Infrastructure for AI – Led by NVIDIA
To meet the rising demands of high-performance AI servers, industry leaders like NVIDIA are introducing new 800V-class power infrastructures. This architecture enables:
- Lower copper losses and smaller cables, improving rack-level power delivery.
- More compact and efficient AC/DC front ends.
- Greater scalability for multi-rack AI clusters.
Eggtronic is at the forefront of this evolution, developing.
